In November 2010, the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority
(CUMTA) was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu (GoTN) through a
Statutory Act. In January 2019, the rules for CUMTA were notified. The creation of
CUMTA is a step towards integrated and sustainable urban mobility for Chennai.
An amendment to the original act, issued in September 2020, placed the Hon’ble
Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu as the Chairperson of CUMTA, and the Minister-in-
charge of the Housing and Urban Development Dept. as the Vice-Chairperson.
CUMTA is well positioned to manage existing institutional gaps and overlaps
amongst various agencies in urban transport within its jurisdiction, which covers
the entire Chennai Metropolitan Planning Area (CMA).
CUMTA jurisdiction extends to the whole of Chennai Metropolitan Area.
