CUMTA has seven core functions:
1. Act as an umbrella body for coordinating with various authorities/agencies to eliminate overlap
2. Undertake Studies for Chennai’s long term transport planning and provide framework [CMP]
3. Facilitate integrated planning and management of urban transport [MMI]
4. Facilitate common ticketing system/seamless fare integration across public transport

5. Plan and regulate funding and expenditure for urban transport initiatives
6. Oversee key transportation projects of CMA
7. Ensure implementation of CMP recommended measures.
CUMTA would be a planning and regulatory body, and it may
not undertake functions related to construction, operation & maintenance of
infrastructure/services of public transport, which would be performed by the
respective implementing agencies.
