In November 2010, the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu (GoTN) through a Statutory Act, and in January 2019, the rules for CUMTA were notified. The creation of CUMTA is a step towards integrated and sustainable urban mobility for Chennai. CUMTA is well placed to manage existing institutional gaps and overlaps amongst various agencies in urban transport within its jurisdiction. According to the act, the jurisdiction of CUMTA extends over the whole Chennai Metropolitan Planning Area (CMA). An amendment to the original act, issued in September 2020, placed the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu as the Chairman of CUMTA and the Minister in charge of the Housing and Urban Development Department as the Vice-Chairman.
